A Painting Atelier in India

Jan 27 - Feb 9, 2024

A lifelong dream of mine has been to take a group of artists to Rajasthan, India on a painting journey. The trip is being organized by the Art Students League of Denver. The dates are Jan 27-Feb 9, 2024. We will paint in plein air, local Rajasthani people, landscapes and more. There are plans for lectures, demonstrations and tours of local places and crafts, including the Taj Mahal on the way to Rajasthan from Delhi, many forts and palaces and a local cuisine cooking class. We will also embark on a tiger safari in Ranthambore, Rajasthan.

We will spend several days at a Boutique Hotel in Jaipur, then in Sewad, Rajasthan at Hertigage Fort and finally in Ranthambore, Rajasthan.

The trip is open at present, but will be an exclusive small group -- If you would like more information, please visit: https://asld.org/atelier-in-india-with-raj-chaudhuri/ please email me or Rachel Basye, Executive Director of the League (This email address is being protected from spambots. Rajasthani Village Market

Painting from Design to Completion

Online Class - 5 weeks | 11/5/2020-12/10/2020 | Thursdays 3-5p (Mountain Time) No class on Thanksgiving week

This online live class is designed as an interactive and up close experience into my studio, via the digital world. You will be able to ask questions, be right next to the canvas while I paint. Receive weekly assignments and individualized critique.

This weekly online class will take you through the steps and processes involved in making a finished painting from photo reference. You will learn about thumbnails, design considerations, how-to grid options, photo combination, value and color studies--all to create the final painting itself. My class format typically starts with a lecture on the topic of the session, followed by a hands-on demo of me painting in oil, and ongoing summary critique of all student work.  A key part of this very personalized class is feedback and suggested changes to your creative work during the course of the class.  For this reason, I cannot accommodate more than twelve students.  This ensures time for critique and one-on-one mentorship throughout this course to build on your personal body of work and artist practice.

The tentative schedule for this class is as follows:
Week 1 – Design and Thumbnails
Week 2 – Combining Photos and a How-to on Grids
Week 3 – Color Study to Full Painting
No class Thanksgiving Week
Week 4 – Edges
Week 5 – Finding Inspiration

Cost for the class is $225

I plan on keeping the class size to a maximum of 12 students, so that I am able to dedicate time to your critiques and give you access to me throughout these weeks to help you along with your painting.

This class is completed and a recording of each session is available to view. To get access to these videos (all 5) the cost is $125. Here's the link to pay for them:

Design Ideas and Applying Color

Video Recording of Class Available (see below)
Online Class - 4 weeks | 9/3/2020-9/24/2020 | Thursdays 3p-5p (Mountain Time)

This online live class is designed as an interactive and up close experience into my studio, via the digital world. You will be able to ask questions, be right next to the canvas while I paint. Receive weekly assignments and individualized critique.

This session will cover design ideas, painting techniques and edges. We will spend the first class on re-enforcing the design. Next we will learn many ways of applying paint, such as scumbling, layering, transparent washing, opaque applications, scraping, feathering and more. Another class will be spent on glazing and the last on edges. For the water colorists in the class, I will cover ideas with demos specific in the medium, so plan on 30 additional minutes after 5pm each time. The November session will be building on these ideas, more to follow on that in a later email.

As always, I want to help you on this journey growing as an artist. Teaching you the right questions to ask to inspire your creativity. The class format includes a lecture, demo and in class critique, and asking questions throughout.  In addition, I will spend a lot of time reviewing your work outside of class to give you detailed feedback each week. We will learn from old, recent and current masters, and with my unique involvement and critique in this highly personal class.  Each class will be recorded and made available to you to view at a later time in case you missed the class or want to revisit them.

You will work on a painting of your own during these 4 weeks and do assignments based on each week’s topic.

Week 3 – Glazing
Week 4 – Edges

Exploring Color

Video Recording of Class Available (see below)
Online Class - 4 weeks | 5/19/2020 - 6/9/2020 | Tuesdays 12noon - 2pm (Mountain Time)

This online live class is designed as an interactive and up close experience into my studio, via the digital world. You will be able to ask questions, be right next to the canvas while I paint. Receive weekly assignments and individualized critique.

This class will focus on the myriad elements of applying color on a painting. We will analyze historical paintings--pre-1850s--and modern paintings and study why and how they are applying color. I will do a demo each class using a color idea within the painting.  My main goals are to teach you to develop your abilities and help you along your artistic journey. The class format includes a lecture, demo and in class critique, and asking questions throughout.  In addition, I offer outside of class focused critiques for your painting work.  Color is key to expressing your talent and vision in a painting.  We can learn from old masters, one another, and with my unique involvement and critique in this highly personal class.

You will work on a painting of your own during these 4 weeks and do assignments based on each week’s topic.
